Serah Adegbenro, Process Engineer
“Tate & Lyle’s graduate programme offered more scope and responsibility than most.”
Responding to a recruitment advertisement, all Chemical Engineering graduate Serah Adegbenro knew about Tate & Lyle was that it was the company behind the family favourite, Lyle’s Golden Syrup. Less than five years on, Serah is in a Technical Manager/Technical Support role at our new plant in Haifa, Israel.
“As a hands-on kind of person I was attracted by Tate & Lyle’s graduate programme, because of the very practical and flexible nature of the scheme. It gives real responsibility early on, and the tools to develop and shape your own career path.
“Since joining Tate & Lyle, I have had various roles giving me a broad range of experience. Just over two years after joining, I got the opportunity to help in the start up and commissioning of a new refinery in Egypt. My previous experience on a worldwide leadership training programme helped, as I was used to working abroad in a multinational team. The Egypt job, coupled with the training and experience I had already gained at Tate & Lyle, gave me the tools necessary to do my current job. Even so, you’re constantly coming up against new problems – and learning how to solve them as you go along.
“I returned to Thames in June 2008. And as of January 2010, I’m a few weeks into my role as Technical Manager at the Israel plant, responsible for optimising the process to help reduce costs and improve efficiency and reliability while maintaining quality. Every day brings a new problem to solve or a new opportunity to develop and learn. More is always expected of me, but I enjoy the challenge!”
