Understanding our science based ingredient solutions

Obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome have become global public health issues associated with an imbalance between calorie intake and expenditure. According to the World Health Organisation, worldwide obesity has more than doubled since 1980. To curb the obesity epidemic, balancing the number of calories consumed and physical activity is key to maintaining a healthy weight. Multiple authoritative bodies across the globe are calling on the food industry to reduce calorie content and portion sizes.

Decades of research point to the health benefits of dietary fibre, including supporting cardiovascular health, tempering spikes in blood sugar, aiding weight management, and promoting a healthy gut.

Recommendations for dietary fibre intakes range from 25-38 g/day depending on country specific guidelines. The World Health Organization suggests worldwide recommendations of greater than 25 g/day but considering that most individuals habitually consume less than 25 grams of fibre per day in total, adding fibre to new or commonly consumed foods is one strategy to increase dietary fibre intake.

At Tate & Lyle our fibre ingredients, including PROMITOR® Soluble Fibre, and STA-LITE® Polydextrose, are sources of dietary fibre that can be added as a solution to reduce sugar and/or fat and calorie content in a variety of foods and beverages, without sacrificing taste or texture.

Leading health organisations acknowledge the value of sweeteners as tools to reduce calories as part of an overall healthy diet.

A scientific statement from the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Diabetes Association (ADA) concluded low calorie sweeteners may aid in reducing total energy intake and assist with weight loss/maintenance, while providing beneficial effects on related metabolic parameters.

Low calorie sweeteners can be used in foods and beverages to reduce calorie sugar intake. At Tate & Lyle our low- and no-calorie sweetener portfolio provides a range of ingredients to reduce calories in foods and beverages, providing more options for consumers in their efforts to reduce their calorie intake.

Protein is required to support health and well-being. This macronutrient is needed to meet human nitrogen requirements and provide indispensable amino acids. Both the quantity and quality of the protein consumed is important to growth and development.

Protein consumption during early growth and development window can have effects on long-term health, including influencing body composition.

Dietary protein contributes to the maintenance and growth of muscle and may assist in weight loss and maintenance. Plant protein in particular, may provide protective effects against certain chronic diseases.

PROMITOR® Soluble Fibre

PROMITOR® Soluble Fibre, is commonly added to foods to boost fibre content. PROMITOR® promotes healthy laxation, and is well tolerated at high levels (40 g/day bolus and 65 g/day multiple doses).

STA-LITE® Polydextrose

The physio-chemical and functional properties of STA-LITE® Polydextrose make it a good candidate for manufacturers to use in developing new and innovative products to meet fibre needs without increasing calorie intake. STA-LITE® Polydextrose is a bulking and texturing ingredient commonly added to foods to boost fibre content and to replace sugar. STA-LITE® Polydextrose is well tolerated at up to 90 grams throughout the day. Research demonstrates that polydextrose provides several physiological benefits that include supporting gastrointestinal health, a low postprandial blood glucose response, and a satiety effect, thus potentially aiding in weight management.

DOLCIA PRIMA® Allulose

DOLCIA PRIMA® Allulose is 70 percent as sweet as sugar and can replace sucrose (table sugar) or high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) to reduce calories. DOLCIA PRIMA® Allulose does not raise blood glucose or insulin levels in healthy individuals, or when consumed by individuals with type-2 diabetes. DOLCIA PRIMA® offers the same functionality as sugar, adding bulk and texture to products and depressing the freezing point in your frozen products. Allulose is generally recognized as safe (GRN 400 and 498 and 693) by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in foods and beverages.

Stevia Solutions

Our stevia solutions offer a complete range of innovative stevia sweeteners produced from stevia leaf extracts. Stevia sweeteners are high-potency, zero calorie sweeteners of natural origin made from the stevia plant that allow for calorie reduction. Stevia offerings from Sweet Green Fields and Tate & Lyle have a substantially cleaner aftertaste than many other stevia derived sweeteners, allowing higher sugar replacement levels without sacrificing taste.

PUREFRUIT™ Monk Fruit Extract

PUREFRUIT™ Monk Fruit Extract is a sweetener that provides natural, great-tasting, zero-calorie sweetness. At around 100-200 times the sweetness of sugar, this ingredient allows for sugar reduction up to 100% in certain foods and beverages. PUREFRUIT™ Monk Fruit Extract is appropriate for a wide-range of applications.

SPLENDA® Sucralose

SPLENDA® Sucralose is 600 times sweeter than sugar and can be used to replace nutritive sweeteners such as sugar or glucose syrup. Unlike sucrose and glucose, sucralose has the added benefit of maintaining tooth mineralization and is non-cariogenic.

Sodium Solutions

SODA-LO® Salt Microspheres addresses sodium reduction needs without compromising taste. SODA-LO® provides a clean taste and delivers the same functionality as standard salt (sodium chloride).
