Fibre Symposium

(CHICAGO, USA), 3rd April 2019 – Tate & Lyle, a leading global provider of food ingredients and solutions, held its inaugural Fiber Symposium on April 1st and 2nd at its global Innovation Center in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, attended by representatives from Food, Beverage and Nutrition Health manufacturers from across the US.

The Fiber Symposium kicked off with a fascinating presentation from a keynote speaker, Johanna Lampe, Full Member and Associate Division Director of the Cancer Prevention Program, Public Health Sciences Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.  Dr. Lampe’s speech, “Human Gut Microbiome and Diet:  Whose diet is it anyway?” addressed the exciting and emerging science behind the microbiome and how fiber can influence it in critical and diverse ways across one’s lifetime.

Fiber is a popular topic in the industry and among consumers.  In fact, fiber made INNOVA’s list of top trends for 2019. Proprietary research conducted by Tate & Lyle (Qualtrics) indicated that 60% of US consumers want to consume more fiber.  But, science has shown that not all fibers are the same, and various sessions in Tate & Lyle’s Symposium demonstrated this from both physiological and functional aspects.

Of particular interest to attendees was hearing about the implications of the new fiber labeling regulations from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  This included: the new regulatory definition for dietary fiber (met by Tate & Lyle’s full portfolio of fibers), and the increase in the recommended daily value of fiber.

“We were honored to host industry leaders and innovators from many different categories at our Fiber Symposium,” said Bill Magee, Senior Vice President and General Manager North America, Food & Beverage Solutions.  “Tate & Lyle has a portfolio of dietary fibers, including PROMITOR® Soluble Fiber, to help our customers meet the demands of their consumers.  Over the past two days, we have participated in interactive sessions, learned more about industry challenges, and shared the science behind and the benefits of our fiber ingredient solutions.”

Attendees also had the opportunity to tour Tate & Lyle’s world class global Innovation Center. Opened in 2012 in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, US, the center has state of the art research and development labs as well as application labs and pilot plants, enabling collaborative new product development with customers from idea to bench top production.
