Celebrating international day of clean energy
Today, on the International Day of Clean Energy, Tate & Lyle joins the global community in recognising the urgent and collective effort to accelerate a just, inclusive, and sustainable energy transition. As the United Nations (UN)1 highlights, access to clean and affordable energy is key to the development of agriculture, business, communications, education, healthcare and transportation – and essential to building a resilient future for all. Clean energy is also central to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs)2 - including two of our priority areas - climate action and responsible consumption and production.
At Tate & Lyle, clean energy and climate action are an integral part of our purpose of Transforming Lives through the Science of Food via our purpose pillar of Caring for Our Planet. Our ingredients begin life in the natural world, so we understand that our success depends on the health of ecosystems and the stability of global food systems - both increasingly impacted by climate change. Food systems account for roughly one third of global greenhouse gas emissions, making our sector’s leadership essential.
Accelerating emissions reductions through clean energy
We have intensified our work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across our operations and supply chain by setting ambitious science-based targets on a 1.5°C trajectory validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). We also remain committed to our goal of becoming a net zero business by 2050.
Our progress is strong and accelerating:
- In the 2024 calendar year, we achieved a 23% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions from a 2019 baseline, driven by efficiency gains, process optimisation, and major upgrades across key manufacturing sites.
- In September 2024, we signed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to deliver renewable electricity and associated renewable energy credits (RECs) annually for a large part of our operations in North America from a wind farm in Texas.
- In November 2024, we reached 100% purchased electricity from renewable sources and associated RECs at all Tate & Lyle operated production sites globally (excluding former CP Kelco sites), achieving our 2030 goal more than five years early. We are now working to transition former CP Kelco production sites to renewable purchased electricity.
These actions are already building resilience into our operations, reducing our exposure to energy volatility, and demonstrating that environmental progress and business performance go hand-in-hand.
Investing in clean energy
Alongside operational progress, we are embedding decarbonisation and resource efficiency into our operations.
- At our Lille Skensved manufacturing facility in Denmark, in April 2025 we completed the first phase of a multiyear decarbonisation programme to cut energy use by 6% and emissions by 7%; The second phase, which is set to achieve a 20%+ reduction in both, is underway.
- We continue to evolve our net zero roadmap, incorporating new technologies such as advanced energy storage and electrified process heat as they become commercially viable.
- Through RE100 membership, we hold ourselves to the highest global standard of renewable electricity transparency and accountability.
These efforts support not only our climate goals, but also those of our customers, many of whom rely on us to help them meet their own clean energy and emission reduction commitments.
Remaining focused on clean energy
- On this International Day of Clean Energy, we remain focused on continuing to:
- Transition our business and supply chains to low carbon, renewable electricity sources
- Deepen partnerships that scale regenerative agriculture and sustainable sourcing
- Invest in science, innovation, and technology to lower the environmental footprint of the food system
- Collaborate across industries to build a more inclusive, resilient, and equitable clean energy future.
Clean energy is not only essential to addressing the impacts of climate - it has a key role to play underpinning global food security, public health, and the wellbeing of future generations. We are proud of the progress we have made, and we know there is more to do. Together with our partners, customers, suppliers, and communities, we will continue advancing the transition to clean energy and a more sustainable world.
