The World Meteorological Organization reports that 2015-2025 were the hottest 11 years on record. Climate related events highlight the growing challenges facing the agricultural systems that feed the world. These events are not isolated incidents, rather they present a growing risk that requires mitigation. They have real implications for crop yields, water availability, farmer livelihoods, food production, and supply chain resilience.
Tate & Lyle are building more sustainable operations and supply chain through ambitious commitments and programs to address climate change.
Climate change remains one of society’s most pressing challenges. It’s essential that we take care of our planet and its ecosystems for its own health and the future health of our business. That’s why Caring for our Planet is one of the three pillars of our purpose and why our ambition remains to be a net zero business by 2050.
Following the acquisition of CP Kelco in November 2024, we focused on integrating their sustainability programs, assessing the climate-related risks, opportunities and footprint of the combined business. Our updated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets, to be delivered by year end March 2036, consistent with reductions required to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, are the most ambitious goal of the Paris Climate Agreement. In June 2026, they were validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the corporate climate action organisation that rigorously validates companies’ climate targets.
Our updated SBTi-validated science-based targets:
Energy and Industrial
- Reduce absolute Scope 1 (direct site) and 2 (purchased energy, electricity and steam) GHG emissions by 63% by the year ended 31 March 2036 from a base year ended 31 March 20221.
- Reduce absolute Scope 3 (supply chain) GHG emissions by 63% within the same timeframe.
Forests, Land and Agriculture (FLAG)
- Reduce absolute scope 3 FLAG emissions by 43% within the same timeframe2.
- No deforestation across our primary deforestation-linked commodities, with a target date of 31 December 2027.

Renewable electricity has the potential to significantly impact global warming. Tate & Lyle recognizes the use of renewable electricity has the potential to reduce our Scope 2 emissions by 70% from a March 2022 year end baseline significantly contributing to our Scope 1 and 2 GHG reduction target.
In 2024, Tate & Lyle joined RE100, a global initiative uniting leading companies committed to 100% renewable electricity. We have set a target to utilize 100% renewable electricity in our operations by 2030 and achieve 100% use of renewable energy by 2040. Tate & Lyle achieved the target in 2024, prior to the acquisition of CP Kelco and remain committed to achieving it again for the combined business by 2030.
Our strategy to achieve our 2030 target includes prioritizing on site renewable electricity generation where feasible, increasing the use of utility provided renewable electricity and/or renewable energy credits (RECs), utilizing power purchase agreements (PPAs) and lastly purchasing RECs.
As of 2025, 65% of our electricity was renewable, in part driven by our partnership with Enel North America on a 12-year PPA to deliver ~256,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of renewable electricity and RECs annually delivering most of Tate & Lyle’s annual electricity use in the U.S. Additional information on the partnership and impact are available here.
